Firefight: An Android Game that Lets You Relive the History of WWII

On Tuesday, the militaries of both countries engaged in a firefight that left countless dead, as each side blamed the other for initiating, then escalating the border firefight that reportedly began north of the Village of Tegh, near the Lachin Corridor in Eastern Armenia.

Add another eerily lifelike robot to the military's rapidly expanding android army. This one is, of all things, a mechanical firefighter. And not only can it climb ladders like its flesh-and-blood counterparts, it's designed to interact with human handlers in a kind of human/robot bucket brigade.

WFTAK provides up-to-the-second location tracking and mapping capabilities to firefighters, as well as cutting edge connectivity solutions and integrations of sensors and cameras for use by firefighters. These and related projects focus on addressing provisions in the 2019 John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management and Recreation Act, Sec. 1114 Wildfire Technology Modernization.

Andrew Beck is a firefighter/EMT and shift training officer with the Mandan City (N.D.) Fire Department. Beck is a live burn instructor and teaches thermal imaging and fire dynamics across N.D. He is also the Mountain Operations manager at Huff Hills Ski Area, where he leads the outside operations teams. Beck has a background in crew resource management and has completed research on how people and organizations operate in stressful environments. Beck was previously a staff member for the Firefighter Near Miss Reporting System.

Division investigators reviewed payroll records from March 8, 2020 to March 7, 2022, and learned firefighters often worked up to 120 hours every two weeks but did not receive additional compensation for hours worked over 106. Investigators determined the city owed 154 firefighters a total of $319,237 in overtime wages.

The investigation also found the city owed 18 paramedics a total of $353,265 in overtime back wages. The division found the city believed incorrectly that paramedics, like firefighters, could work up to 106 hours per two-week period before overtime compensation was owed. In fact, since the paramedics did not perform fire suppression work, they were due overtime for hours over 40 in a workweek.

According to Christophe Thuot, SDIS Lieutenant for Ain, Samsung has provided 200 Galaxy Tab Active 3 tablets to firefighters across 58 rescue centers in the Ain department. The device comes with a military-grade build quality (MIL-STD 810H standard) and an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. The enhanced touch sensitivity of the screen allows usage with gloves on or under the rain. All of this ensures optimal functionality in extreme conditions environmental conditions. The tablet can also survive falls from a height of up to 1.5m.

There are about a dozen personnel between the airport and the fire department that have specialty certification in aircraft rescue firefighting. As part of their training, they have to conduct live fire training exercises.

The airport has two fire engines, with one of the rigs staffed from 15 minutes before a commercial airliner lands. The rig is also present until 15 minutes after the airliner takes off. If more firefighting apparatus is needed, those engines are supplied by the fire department.

Insitu, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Boeing Company, assisted from the air in the firefight against the Camp Fire in Northern California, now deemed the deadliest, most destructive wildfire in California's history.

"Our hearts go out to all of those affected by the terrible Camp Fire tragedy," said Esina Alic, Insitu President and CEO. "We are honored to have had the opportunity to help with fire suppression efforts using our ScanEagle(R) Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) and INEXA suite of information and analytics tools, and support firefighters in this massive battle."

Insitu provided vital information to firefighters with its ScanEagle UAS, and its TacitView(TM) and Catalina(TM) software payload. The ScanEagle's camera data and software generated daily operational maps and full motion video detailing the fire's movement.

The TacitView and Catalina capabilities are designed to be interoperable with government agency systems enabling domestic remote sensing operations, and the software capabilities are extremely effective in informing firefighters about fire movement in real time. The data provided by Insitu allowed Geographic Information System (GIS) specialists to quickly produce geospatial maps and perform further analyses.

Flying at night, when manned aircraft typically are grounded due to safety concerns, the Insitu team flew the ScanEagle UAS beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) providing perimeter mapping, hot spot locations and points of interest, while disseminating real-time video feed to assist CALFIRE along with multiple local and national firefighting response teams in their daily morning planning meetings.

The Insitu Rapid Response team supported firefighters by supplying this data for more optimal fire suppression planning in the extremely rugged terrain of the Paradise, California area. This up-to-date information provided fire incident commanders with enhanced emergency response efforts, increased situational awareness and safety, and supported planning and resource allocation.

These tools typically are utilized in defense missions, and now are being widely adopted by first responders for a variety of domestic operations, particularly for use in firefighting operation tools and products.
